When threats begin, Darcy realises someone might be prepared to do anything to hide the truth

Following the separation of her parents, seventeen-year-old Darcy moves with her mum to a wealthy Scottish village which hit the headlines when a local girl was stabbed at a Halloween party two years previously.

Darcy always wondered about Christian Henderson’s conviction of murder, fascinated by this attractive misfit and his story.

Much of Christian’s trial took place online, before he even reached the courtroom, with witch-hunt style podcasts and online forums spinning stories of what happened the night of the party.

Darcy befriends the inner social circle at school and strikes up a friendship with Christian through letters, determined to uncover unanswered questions around the conviction.

But who can she believe?

WINNER of the TC Farries Award. Mystery and romance. What is deadly allure of The Barn? 17-year-old Kat Sullivan has been devastated by the loss of her twin sister, Abby, the most recent of five teenagers to have died in the town of Eddison, all within a year. No-one seems able to explain the circumstances surrounding her death. As Kat struggles to move on, she is introduced to an underground hangout – the Barn – by Abby s friends. There, she meets the enigmatic Rob and his friend Michael, art students who have re-created pop artist Andy Warhol s infamous Factory, where creative types can construct art and socialise. Drawn into Rob s social scene, and seduced by the attention of this attractive stranger, Kat relishes the freedom and escape offered by the Barn s non-conformity and creativity. But the Barn holds a strange influence over those who frequent it, and soon Kat begins to realise how little she knew about her sister s life. Kat needs answers. She also needs to stay alive.

It is astonishing that this is Victoria Gemmell’s debut novel, such is the assurance with which she writes. The mystery of Follow Me unfolds bewitchingly and elegantly within its well-paced narrative and the plot is superbly structured throughout. I was struck by the intriguing setting – the Barn, with its ominous, yet compelling atmosphere and irresistible parallels with the Andy Warhol art scene.
This is a gripping book that will appeal to young adults from mid-teen upwards, particularly as the characters are both believable and appealing. I found that Victoria Gemmell handled their dialogue well and made it both lively and credible. She is a author with an assured future.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I felt like I was living and breathing the story, and the characters were all so fascinating that at times it felt hypnotic. The tension builds wonderfully and despite my best efforts I didn’t predict the ending. Like all great books it’s the little things that make it special – this book has lots of special moments. Skilful dialogue, tension, dark tones and mystery – Victoria Gemmell took me to places that at times I didn’t want to return from. It’s the sort of book that readers mourn when they finish. I love finding new authors, and to find one so incredibly talented at the beginning of her career is a wonderful thing. I look forward to book two with great anticipation.
